Free Winter Lecture: “The Emergence

of a True North Fork Cuisine”

————————

————————

Join North Fork Chef and Author John Ross for fascinating free lecture, the first in Southold Historical Museum’s “Farm to Table: A Not So New Concept” winter series.

———

The community lecture, titled “The Emergence of a True North Fork Cuisine”, will be held at 4:00pm on Thursday, Feb. 15 at Southold Town Recreation Center.

———

Ross has been a professional chef since 1965 and was the chef/owner of Ross’ North Fork Restaurant in Southold, NY for 27 years. He is considered a pioneer of the Farm to Table movement. He cooked from scratch using local fresh ingredients procured from farm stands, seafood markets, and local wineries at a time when people were embracing convenience foods. He is the author of several books, The Poetry of Cooking, The Food and Wine of the North Fork, and The Story of North Fork Wine.

Collections Corner: Peconic Train Platform

————————

This image from our Charles Meredith collection is dated 1916. It is an image of the Peconic train platform filled with barrels and crates, most likely containing agricultural produce ready for shipment. This would have been a common scene in each of our communities along the railroad. The bounty of the North Fork was often sold to markets and restaurants in New York City.

————————

Charles Meredith was a local photographer originally based out of Cutchogue. He photographed thousands of images of daily life including parades, accidents, funerals, and locales, covering all parts of Southold Township.
