Dan Rizzie’s first and “sacred” word to describe printmaking is “collaboration.” Join us for our February Insight Sunday and the final day of our exhibition, Master Impressions where the formidable artist and East End printmaker discusses the beauty of the collaborative process between artist, printer, and the press. Guests will be able to view some of Dan’s prints and artist books and gain an in-depth look at his practice.

Fascinated by the fact that something as simple as ink on linoleum could produce beautiful art and entranced by the endless possibilities that printmaking as a medium offers, Dan found himself drawn to the medium with ample curiosity and zeal. Reflecting on his 40 years of being an artist, he realizes that most of his work is prints. Join us for our final event for the exhibition that honors the beauty and legacy of the medium. A Q&A will follow the discussion.

Insight Sundays, held the last Sunday of each month, provide individual artists with the opportunity to talk in-depth about their processes, techniques, and concepts in the presence of their work. The program allows the audience to see through the artist’s eye. It is a monthly program open to the public and free to our members. Dan’s work is included in our Winter exhibition, Master Impressions: Artists and Printers on the South Fork (1965-2010), on view January 14 – February 25th during our exhibition hours, Wednesday through Sunday 12 PM – 5 PM.

DAN RIZZIE

Dan Rizzie is an American Contemporary artist and musician. A painter, printmaker, and collage artist, Dan has lived and worked for many years in Sag Harbor, NY. Through a love of concern for materials, color, form, and especially the walls and structure of urban environments, Dan has arrived at a set of symbols based on simple color, rectilinear form, and surface. These Symbols serve to mark periods of heightened awareness and to document his feelings while remaining within formal established conventions. By the arrangement of these symbols/forms he achieves a composition that is asymmetrical and balanced. The end results are objects of contemplation; works that provide the viewer access to his feelings.

His approach to art is one of introspection. What information he assimilates and translates into imagery comes from a belief that like life, art is concerned with the search for one’s self, ones thoughts. Understanding the two as one will always be the final goal.

Dan received his BFA from Hendrix College, Arkansas in 1973 and was later awarded the college’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2005. In 1973 Dan received his MFA from Southern Methodist University, Dallas. He has exhibited across the nation, with extensive exhibitions in Texas, New Mexico, and New York. An expert printmaker, Dan’s work has been published with the Tarmind Institue, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the Tandem Press, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin. His work can be seen in permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Dallas Museum of Art, the Scottsdale Museum of Art, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

(View the events calendar here) The Church was established in 2019 by artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik. Housed in a deconsecrated 19th-century church, its doors were opened in April 2021. Our mission is to foster creativity and to honor the living history of Sag Harbor as a maker village. The East End represents an exceptional artistic legacy, spanning the practices of Indigenous art of several centuries ago, Abstract Expressionists of the mid 20th Century, and the many celebrated writers, makers, musicians, and visual artists of the recent past and current moment. Core programming includes visual art exhibitions, concerts and events, educational programming, workshops, lectures, and an artist’s residency.
