Miss Case, a music teacher at Southampton Schools in the mid-1930s, was a trained violinist and a teacher in the Suffolk Conservatory of Music based in Riverhead. She taught music in many towns on Long Island, including in Southampton Schools where she served as assistant supervisor of music (Southampton Press, 7 May 1937). Shown here are her Southampton Schools music class schedule and a holiday school concert program, both from our recently acquired Long Island Music Associations Collection.
The schedule, titled in Miss Case’s handwriting as “My Schedule Southampton 1937,” shows us that Ms. Case held an average of six violin and cello classes on each school day. Kindergarteners received one music class per week on Fridays. Daily music classes began at 8:30 in the morning and continued to the final 3:15 pm class.
Miss Case’s typewritten holiday concert program is also marked with a handwritten note that reads: “My first experience as a teacher involved with students’ Christmas program, Southampton.” The program is noteworthy in that we see how the music selections for holiday school concerts in the mid-1930s in Southampton were primarily Christian/religious based. For example, the program lists a number of Bible readings and religious music selections, such as “Away in the Manger” being performed by third graders, “Little Town of Bethlehem” by grades 5 and 6, and “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” by the “whole school.”
