History Matters

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Letter from the Director
Dear Friend,
Since starting as the Executive Director three years ago, I’ve had the honor of stewarding East Hampton’s cultural heritage. During that time, the Historical Society has managed the preservation and interpretation of six historic properties and nearly 20,000 artifacts, presented exhibits, walking tours, lecture series, and other public programs, and served thousands of students.
In just the last few months, we forged partnerships with local school districts to institutionalize our educational programming and broke ground on our new Collections Storage Center at Mulford Farm. It’s very exciting to see how East Hampton’s past has inspired, engaged, and connected people in our community.
Our history is vital. As historian David Thelen has described it, we need the past just like we need food and oxygen. It sustains us. It gives us a sense of identity and understanding about where we’ve come from and where we’re going.
To continue this work of keeping the past present in East Hampton, I need your help. Without your support, our community cannot sustain its sense of place. Please make a gift to the East Hampton Historical Society today!
Sincerely,
Steve Long, Executive Director
Land & Sea: Exhibit at Clinton Academy
Presented in collaboration with the East Hampton Historical Farm Museum, this exhibit about cartography and maritime navigation features early navigation tools, maps, and charts used by sailors from East Hampton and the South Fork to navigate the waters of the mid-Atlantic. Connecting past and present, the exhibit is on display exactly where students enrolled in Clinton Academy during the late 18th and 19th centuries learned navigation, surveying, and seafaring.
The Land & Sea exhibition is co-curated by Stacy Myers, Director of Education of the Historical Society and Prudence and Brian Carabine from the Farm Museum from the collections of both institutions.
On display in the exhibit is a cross-staff from the East Hampton Historical Society’s maritime navigation collection. This celestial navigation instrument made its appearance in Europe in the 1300’s, and by the 1700’s, it had been fully developed for seafaring. The cross-staff was used for finding the latitude by measuring the altitude of the polar star and for measuring the altitude of the sun.
On display in Clinton Academy at 151 Main Street in East Hampton through December 20, Land & Sea is open Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 3 PM. The exhibition is free to visit.
Groundbreaking Ceremony
Campaign for Collections Stewardship
Photo Credit: Richard Lewin
On November 7, the East Hampton Historical Society was thrilled to celebrate the groundbreaking for its new Collections Storage Center, which will serve as the repository for our community’s material culture.
In 1980, the director of the Historical Society’s Board of Trustees urged the construction of a centralized fully climate-controlled storage center and now, over 40 years later, the Historical Society is finally building the home that our collection deserves.
The Historical Society is especially grateful to Senator Tony Palumbo and Assemblyman Fred Theile for attending the groundbreaking and presenting brief remarks. Thanks to their help, the Historical Society was able to secure a $442,000 grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. The project has also been championed by the Historical Society’s Board of Trustees, including Hollis Forbes, Capital Campaign Chair, Frank Newbold, Chair of the Collections Committee, Ray Harden of BK Builder and Bruce Siska, who both sit on the Buildings & Grounds Committee, Board President Debbie Druker and immediate past president, Hilary Osborn Malecki.
While funding for the construction of our new Collections Storage Center, we still need to outfit it with state-of-the-art compact mobile storage equipment so we’ll have room to grow our collections in the future. If you’re interested in learning more about the Campaign for Collections Stewardship, please email Steve Long, Executive Director, or call 631.324.6850, x3.
Thank you to everyone who attended our House & Garden Tour Benefit
It was a wonderful success!
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended our 39th Annual “House & Garden Tour” fundraiser during Thanksgiving weekend. It was our most successful House & Garden Tour yet!
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our homeowners, the Tour featured five spectacular houses located in East Hampton Village, Amagansett, and Springs. In addition to having fascinating backgrounds and histories, the houses featured wonderful interior design. Tour patrons got the opportunity to walk through a converted 18th century haybarn, the carriage house for Grey Gardens that “Little” Edie sold in the 1950s, and the home of one of East Hampton’s preeminent builders in the late 19th century.
Special thanks to our House & Garden Tour Committee: Special Events Chair Dale Leff, Jim Blauvelt, and Lys Marigold. We also really appreciate the dozens of volunteers who staffed the houses during the Tour.
Save November 28 & 29, 2025 for next year’s House & Garden Tour. It will be our 40th edition!
