History Matters

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Letter from the Director
Dear Friend,
Thanks to the ongoing generosity of supporters like you, the East Hampton Historical Society is fulfilling its mission “to illuminate the past and inspire the community through the preservation and interpretation of East Hampton’s history.”
Through the year, the Historical Society stewards five historic properties – Clinton Academy (which includes the Town House and Hook Schoolhouse), the Dominy Shops, East Hampton Town Marine Museum, Moran Studio, and Mulford Farm – which are accessible to thousands of visitors annually.
In addition, we are –
  • Initiating the restoration of the Mulford Farmhouse to interpret the American Revolution in East Hampton,
  • Breaking ground on a new Collections Storage Center to house our nearly 20,000 artifacts,
  • Partnering with other nonprofits, schools, and local government to dramatically increase our programming,
  • Teaching cultural and natural history to students from across the East End,
  • Developing opportunities for visitors to engage with the past using digital technology, and
  • Implementing a long-range strategic plan, including a new mission and vision statement.
Beyond our own historic properties, the Historical Society is collaborating with community organizations Town-wide to present the past. Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited to begin moving forward with our new strategic plan, as outlined in our Annual Report. Our vision is to have the Historical Society serve as a key resource where history comes alive, and our community comes together to explore East Hampton’s layered past. Achieving this vision depends on you.
Without your support, our community can’t sustain its sense of place. We need your help to keep the past present in East Hampton. Please make a gift to the East Hampton Historical Society today!
Sincerely,
Steve Long, Executive Director
Mirroring the appearance of the current storage barn (indicated by the arrow above) the new Collections Storage Center will include a basement level and provide exponentially more storage space in a fully climatized environment.
Attending the groundbreaking will be NYS Senator Anthony Palumbo and Assemblyman Fred Thiele, who were instrumental in securing funding from New York State, plus donors to the Historical Society’s Campaign for Collections Stewardship. Please RSVP today to join us!
East Hampton’s Life-Saving Heritage on display
at Montauk Library’s Local History Center
Through December 2024
Stacy Myers, the Historical Society’s Director of Education, co-curated a new exhibition featuring objects and photographs from the Amagansett Life-Saving and Coast Guard Station at the Montauk Library’s Local History Exhibit Center. On display through December, the exhibit explores the story of our local life-saving services during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Models of the halfway and lifeboat houses show the evolution of the architecture of early life-saving structures before the system of stations on Long Island was built. Photographs depict the station’s crew, a shipwreck off the southern shore, demonstrations of the breeches buoy and Lyle gun, and the relocation and restoration of the Amagansett Station.
Located at 871 Montauk Highway in Montauk, this free exhibit is open during Library hours: Mon., Tues., Thurs, and Sat: 9 AM to 6 PM. Wed. & Fri.: 9 AM to 8 PM, and Sun.: 1 PM to 6 PM. To learn more, visit the Montauk Library’s website.
From the Collection
The collections of the East Hampton Historical Society are amazing! When Stacy Myers, Director of Education recently began developing a new program for students to learn about cartography and navigation, she discovered the cross shaped wooden object (shown here) in the collection at the Marine Museum. It’s called a cross-staff, which was described and illustrated in George Mixter’s Primer of Navigation, which is also in the Marine Museum’s collection. Initially published in 1940, the book remains a leading resource for boaters and sailors around the world.
Used by mariners beginning around 1500, the cross-staff is a navigational tool used to measure the angle between the horizon and a celestial body such as the sun or stars. By knowing this angle, a sailor could then determine the latitude and direction. Soon students will be learning more about it during their field trips to the East Hampton Historical Society.
