OUR PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP

WITH THE TOWN OF EAST HAMPTON

The Town of East Hampton is the Playhouse Foundation’s public partner in this project, providing essential support of our shared goals. We commend the Town’s commitment to improving the lives of our community members and for recognizing the vital role the Aquatic Center will play in enhancing residents’ quality of life, by providing opportunities for wellness, recreation, and swim instruction. Photo: Deputy Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez, Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc, Playhouse Foundation President Sarah Iudicone

MEET LARS MERSEBURG OF IMAGINE SWIMMING

Montauk resident Lars Merseburg is the co-founder and CEO of Imagine Swimming, a professional pool operator that has successfully run swimming pools and swim instruction in NYC for over 20 years. A member of the German National Swim Team for eight years, Lars was an NCAA Champion, Academic All-American, and Captain of the Cal Swimming & Diving Team at the University of California at Berkeley. Lars and Imagine Swimming have provided invaluable input on the design and operation of the new Aquatic Center and we’re grateful for their collaboration!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC POOLS

Recent news articles and opinion pieces have taken a renewed look at the vital importance of public pools, not only for recreational opportunities but for swimming education—as drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the US. These pieces truly underline the importance of bringing a state-of-the-art Aquatic Center to our Montauk community:

Drowning Is No. 1 Killer of Young Children. U.S. Efforts to Fix It Are Lagging. The New York Times, July 8, 2023

Why America Stopped Building Public Pools. CNN, July 24, 2023

PREVIEW: THE SECOND FLOOR

CULTURAL CENTER

As construction begins on the phase-one first-floor Aquatic Center, our fundraising efforts to complete the second-floor multi-purpose Cultural Center will continue. See 2nd-floor renderings and plans.

The second floor will feature a modular/flexible layout with modern amenities to meet our community’s current and future needs. Adaptable to both large and small spaces, the second floor will support multiple uses, including:

• Performances, gatherings, special events, lectures, classes, meetings, conferences, and more.

• Groups, organizations, and businesses will be able to host off-site events or meetings in a convenient local location and residents will be able to hold their own special events.

Our community will finally be able to enjoy a wide variety of community and cultural programming in this spacious modern center—right in the heart of Montauk!
