At Play surveys artists’ perennial fascination with entertainment in all forms. Framing this topic between the nineteenth century Belle Époque and today, the exhibition features works by Pablo Picasso, Reginald Marsh, Everett Shinn, and Max Beckmann among many others, gathered to represent a wide range of expressions, from entertainment-related activities to the fascinating personalities involved.

————

At Play encompasses dance, music, theater, movies, circus, boating, and beach scenes, along with horseracing and various sports, both active and passive. Examples of works include images of rockstars and Hollywood icons – from Andy Warhol’s celebrity portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor to photographs of The Beatles by the legendary photographer Harry Benson. Also featured are archival items from The Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic, including costumes by Marc Chagall for Die Zauberflöte, vintage fashion items by such designers as Alfred Shaheen, and iconic costumes from the Folies-Bergère in Paris

————

Transcending cultures and national boundaries, the impulse to create such images reveals a universal quest for spiritual uplift through art. As many of these perspectives have persisted through even the most challenging times, the theme of entertainment is a constant aspect of the renewing character of art.

A family exhibition entitled May We All Grow Up to be Children will transform the museum’s Gallery 5 for this special immersive experience. It is based on the International Book Award Finalist for Children’s Literature, The Boy and the Boy King, with 26 works of art by George H. Lewis and co-written by Lewis and A.D. Lubow.

————

The book and exhibition convey a magical story about the power of friendship and imagination. A boy from New York City named Arthur gets teased and scolded for spending too much time in his own imagination. One day, he and his imaginary friend Bun-Bun run away, travelling back in time to ancient Egypt. There, they meet the Boy King Tutankhamun and play as if they’d known each other forever – swinging over the Nile, sailing the river, shooting arrows into the desert sands, and riding chariots into the night sky. Armed only with friendship and imagination, the boys return to their respective worlds, prepared to wage peace, not war.

Louis Comfort Tiffany transformed the decorative arts during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Combining refined craftsmanship with a love for color, he was renowned for his ability to “paint” with glass. He revolutionized the production of stained glass, incorporating it into innovative designs and bolstering an industry that had barely changed since the Middle Ages.

————

The son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, founder of the jewelry and silver company Tiffany & Co., L.C. Tiffany’s prolific body of watercolor and oil paintings is also noteworthy, as he trained and began his career as a painter. Through his family’s financial fortune, Tiffany journeyed widely throughout North America, Europe, and North Africa in his early career, painting such foreign locales as Egypt, Italy, and France.

————

This exhibition highlights the Nassau County Museum of Art’s newly acquired artworks by Tiffany and his workshop, which enhance the substantial assortment of his paintings and glassworks in the Museum’s collection, one of the largest such holdings in the world.
