From the Archives

In September of 1973, Jackson Pollock’s 1952 painting Blue Poles was purchased by the National Gallery of Australia for a record-setting $1.3 million. The acquisition was approved by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, as was the publicizing of its price tag, which sparked public debate over the value of contemporary abstract art.

Originally titled Number 11, 1952, the work appeared for the first time under the name Blue Poles at a 1954 Sidney Janis Gallery exhibition.
