The Peconic Land Trust is joining with former friends, colleagues, and followers of Peter Matthiessen to pay homage to this award-winning novelist, naturalist, Zen priest, adventurer, and champion for the world’s indigenous people. The Trust is serving as fiscal agent for the proposed Peter Matthiessen Center (PMC).
———
If successful, the PMC will serve as the first writers’ residency of its kind in this beautiful corner of the world. And it will ensure that a piece of our cultural history will be preserved for generations to come. Today, Matthiessen’s home, writing studio, and Zendo remain intact on a property in Sagaponack, rich with majestic trees just down the road from the Atlantic Ocean.
———
Since launching their initial fundraising campaign last year, the PMC was able to raise sufficient funds to hire a part-time project coordinator, obtain a title report and appraisal, develop a site plan, and gain crucial support from the Sagaponack Village Mayor and Board. Next month they hope to be considered by the Community Preservation Fund for support from the Town of Southampton to protect the property where Matthiessen penned the vast majority of his works.
———
With this key support secured, the PMC hopes sufficient funds can be raised to acquire the property and restore the buildings and landscaping, and begin building an endowment to underwrite the annual operation of the writing center.

Thanks to a successful film screening event this September, the PMC is well on their way to completing their year-end goal. They currently need to raise $55,000 to lay the groundwork to acquire and restore the property.

On behalf of the Peter Matthiessen Center, we ask that you consider making a tax-deductible charitable gift online or by check. Every contribution helps bring them closer to fulfilling their vision of honoring one of the greatest writers of our time.
