Mosaics of Color: An Alma Thomas Workshop

Monday, February 5, 4:00pm – 5:15pm EST

An abstract painter in the 1960s and ’70s, Alma Thomas was the first

African-American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum

of American Art in New York City in 1972. Explore the exuberant color of her abstract paintings, then create your own using a mosaic of colors. Have paint supplies on hand.

Paint on the Move: Jack Whitten

Tuesday, February 6, 4:00pm – 5:15pm EST

How can squeegees, rakes, and combs be used to create a masterpiece of art? Discover how American artist Jack Whitten made his mark with unconventional tools. Then splash, pour, scrape, and swoosh paint to create an abstract painting. Bring paint supplies and unusual painting tools such as sticks, forks, combs, rollers, sponges, and anything else.

Rip it Up: David Driskell

Friday, February 9, 4:00pm – 5:15pm EST

David Driskell was an American artist, scholar, curator and a leading authority on African American art. Explore his and Lee Krasner’s innovative collage technique: ripping up paintings and reconfiguring them to create new compositions. Then create your own collage painting. Have on hand paint supplies, a sheet of paper, a surface for your collage, and glue.
