Virtual Tour

Our Director of Education and Engagement Andrew Tharler has created an interactive Virtual Tour of our Joseph Lloyd Manor, which was completed in 1767, where you can explore this amazing building. Click on the image below to access the tour.

This house was home to Jupiter Hammon, who was the first published African American Poet and also enslaved. To learn more about the Jupiter Hammon Project, click here.  And click here to read his incredible poem, An Evening Thought.

Collection Digitization Efforts

PLI was recently awarded a grant from the Long Island Library Resource Council to fund the digitization of Preservation Long Island’s furniture collection. Lauren Brincat, Chief Curator and Director of Collections, is overseeing this project.  This is an important part of increasing accessibility to PLI’s important collection of Long Island material culture. Stay tuned for details on when the collection becomes accessible online.

Historic Preservation Workshop

On April 17, 2025 from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM we are holding an historic preservation workshop with experts from the New York State Historic Preservation Office and the Preservation League of New York State. We will host this event at our Headquarters at 161 Main St. in Cold Spring Harbor.  Presenters will introduce participants to the many resources available for preserving historic places.

Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with the pros for tips and tools to navigate the resources available to all Long Islanders – from historic property owners and businesses, to nonprofits and municipalities. Registrants are welcome to participate in the full day of programming or attend individual sessions of interest.

Women’s History Month

This Women’s History Month, Preservation Long Island’s chief curator, Lauren Brincat, shares a powerful story from Harriet Jacobs’s (1813–1897) autobiography, “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.” In the summer of 1843, Harriet stayed at the Marine Pavilion in Rockaway as a nurse in the employment of the prominent Willis Family.  To read the blog post, click on the image of the lithograph of the Marine Pavilion that was added to our collection almost forty years ago.
