Sag Harbor, NY — Sag Harbor Cinema continues its “Projections” series on Sunday, March 23rd, from 4pm-5pm, with Hamptons Community Outreach. This event is free to the public and will feature the panel discussion “Supporting the Shinnecock: Home Repair and Community Empowerment with Hamptons Community Outreach.” There will also be a short film presentation by Hamptons Community Outreach that highlights their home repair program on the Shinnecock Indian Nation’s sovereign land.

Featured speakers will include Marit Molin, LCSW, Founder and Executive Director of Hamptons Community Outreach; Denise “Weetahmoe” Silva-Dennis (Shinnecock/Hassanamisco-Nipmuc), artist, educator, and Hamptons Community Outreach Board Member; and Becky Genia, activist, musician, and Shinnecock Indian Tribal Member. Shawn Sachs, Sag Harbor Cinema Board Member and Partner and CEO of Sunshine Sachs, will moderate the discussion and the Q&A that follows.

Sag Harbor Cinema founded the “Projections” series in 2021 with the goal to amplify the work and the mission of other East End non-profit organizations by providing a space to have conversations and to build audiences using the Cinema’s facility, network, and digital presence.

“No child should have their potential limited by substandard housing,” says Marit Molin, Hamptons Community Outreach’s Founder and Executive Director. “By renovating homes and providing prefabricated houses, we are not only improving living conditions for families—we are changing life trajectories and fostering opportunity for generations to come.”

“We are proud to partner with Hamptons Community Outreach to highlight their vital work in support of the Shinnecock Indian Nation,” says Genevieve Villaflor, Sag Harbor Cinema’s Executive Director. “Their dedication to uplifting East End communities through home repair and other means of support speaks to the power of compassion and collective action. We hope that this program will help shed light on their inspiring mission.”

Sag Harbor Cinema

As a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) community-based organization, Sag Harbor Cinema (SHC) is dedicated to presenting the past, present, and future of the movies and to preserving and educating about films, filmmaking, and the film-going experience in its three state-of-the-art theaters. The Cinema engages its audiences and the community year-round through dialogue, discovery, and appreciation of the moving image—from blockbusters to student shorts and everything in between. Revitalized and reimagined through unprecedented community efforts to rebuild the iconic Main Street structure after a fire nearly destroyed it in 2016, SHC continues a long historic tradition of entertainment in the heart of Sag Harbor Village.

The mission of Hamptons Community Outreach is to lift people out of poverty and reduce human suffering by meeting their most basic and critical needs, and by creating opportunities that change the life trajectories for marginalized neighbors. Their vision is to end poverty on the East End of Long Island, which they hope to achieve with four programs: home repair, food outreach, crisis care, and child-centered programs.
