Baymen were prophesizing an unprofitable season for taking scallops. Once so plentiful, scallops were becoming an epicurean luxury. The catch was small, but prices high averaging better than $5 per gallon net returns for New York shipments. Even clams, which supplied the tables of the poor at times of slack labor conditions, were difficult to obtain and bringing high prices. It was expected that in the future, the great yields of shellfish on Long Island would disappear unless some means of conservation was introduced.
The Pierson girls’ soccer team played their first game of the season on Saturday at Southampton against the girls’ soccer team of Southampton High School. Although the Pierson girls played well during the first half, they seemed to go to pieces in the second. The result was that Southampton won the game with a score of 3 to 1.
Following the last trip of the steamboat Shinnecock on October 9, service by steamboat between Sag Harbor, Greenport, and New London was discontinued by the Montauk Steamboat Company.
