In honor of Black History Month, we would like to highlight

Jupiter Hammon, America’s first published African American Poet.


While Jupiter never lived on Shelter Island, his father (Obium) and

grandparents (Oyo and Tamero) had lived in slavery at Sylvester Manor

and may even be buried there.
