Magic Carpet Tour of Southold’s Offshore Lighthouses

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
—————————————
Please join us from 1 PM – 3 PM on Thursday, Feb. 13 for a fascinating lecture on the lighthouses just off Southold’s shoreline.
The lecture and discussion will take place at the Anne Currie-Bell House at the Maple Lane Campus and is free to attend.
The presentation will be given by Ted Webb, a native North Forker and former president of the East End Seaport Museum. Mr. Webb has also served as offshore cruise narrator at Long Beach Bar “Bug” Lighthouse, and is the current cruise narrator for Cross Sound Ferry Lighthouse Tours, among other accomplishments.
This event is sponsored by Southold Historical Museum and is hosted by the Docents of Horton Point Lighthouse. Q & A and potluck desserts to follow.
Collections Corner: Greenport Harbor Swimmers
———————————-
It is hard to think about swimming right now when winter temps are struggling to stay above freezing, but we love this sweet photo of a group of swimmers taken nearly 100 years ago.
There is always some point in the summer when it is just too hot (if you can imagine), especially in the time before air conditioning existed! These swimmers look like they might be in the waters just off Clark Street in Greenport. The image is part of the Frank K. Hartley collection, Greenport Harbor, c. 1907.
Lots of Things to “Love” at the Treasure Exchange
————————
Our volunteers were hard at work getting the Treasure Exchange ready for the recent reopening. The shop is beautifully decorated and stocked with antiques and gently used merchandise that reflect the season. There are plenty of wonderful, quality made Valentine’s gift ideas for you to choose from!
The Treasure Exchange is now open during winter hours from 11 AM – 3 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.
Come find unique home décor items, kitchenware, jewelry, antiques, vintage toys, and fashion accessories. All sales support the mission of the Museum.
The Treasure Exchange is located inside the historic Prince Building at 54325 Main Road, Southold
Coastal Forts of Eastern
Long Island
At the outbreak of the Spanish American War, the U. S. found itself ill equipped to properly defend Long Island Sound from an invading force. The Federal Government responded by commissioning a series of forts across the mouth of the Sound. The forts were to be in addition to Fort Trumbull in Connecticut built in 1777, and sited to protect New York City, Providence, Bridgeport and New Haven. Read more about this intriguing part of East End history on our website.
