The team did a superb job this past week working in rhythm with the weather and the conditions in the field. When it was sunny and hot, we stirred and hoed the dry soil surface, wiping out as many weeds as possible. In the onion patch, Elias, Jake and Billy each appear to be playing one string of a dirt guitar as they pluck weeds from between the plants!
When it rained, we sheltered in the greenhouse and caught up on the week’s seeding and repotting. As the rain continued, we moved into the high tunnel and added the second trellis clips to the fast-growing cucumbers and tomatoes. It won’t be long before we start picking the gherkins.
When the rain stopped, we took advantage of a cloudy, cool morning to harvest. Lettuce, radish, kale and chard will keep beautifully because the rain hydrated them well. More and more customers are visiting the Farmstand each week, and we are grateful to Jennifer and her team for creating such enticing displays of what we’re growing for the community.
Farmstand UpdateJune feels like the true kickoff to the season at the Farmstand.
This month, you can expect to see an abundance of fresh spring vegetables hitting the shelves, including: asparagus, iceberg and red leaf lettuce, bok choy, swiss chard, kale, spinach, radishes and more. We’re also stocked up on our fresh pasture raised eggs, woodland raised pork, and our delicious Manor Made food items inspired by what’s growing on the farm.
Stop by and discover a new corner of the Farmstand, “Manor Mercantile,” a thoughtfully curated collection of host and hostess gifts perfect for summer gatherings, dinner parties, weekends on the island, and just-because gifting.
We’re excited to share more of life on the farm with you this season through our new social media accounts:

Juneteenth CelebrationSylvester Manor will celebrate the 2026 Juneteenth Holiday with our annual commemoration at the Afro-Indigenous Burial Ground with a Calling of The Names.
We invite you to participate in the ceremony as we honor the Indigenous, Enslaved, and Free men, women and children of color who lived, worked, and were buried on this site.
Archaeologists from the University of Massachusetts/Boston utilized ground-penetrating radar technology to confirm that nearly 100 individuals are interred at the site. Through extensive research, the History & Heritage staff has identified over 70 of these individuals, uncovering their names and chronicling their life stories at Sylvester Manor and Shelter Island.
Please join us at the Burial Ground for a group participation ceremony of the reading of the names and a traditional libation homage to the ancestors.

Shakespeare at the ManorJoin us on a warm July evening at Sylvester Manor for Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night — a comedy of shipwrecked twins, lovesick dukes, and clever disguises that ends in music and improbable joy. Spread your blanket on the lawn, uncork something cold, and let one of the greatest love stories ever written unspool as the summer sky dims around you.
Love the Bard? Don’t miss two special celebrations: The Shipwreck at Island Boatyard on July 23 — an evening of music, performances, and themed drinks — and a Shakespeare Fair at the Windmill on July 26, with performances, farm treats, and fun for all ages.

We’re thrilled to welcome The James Hunter Six to Sylvester Manor for a special Creekside Concert this summer. Led by UK singer-songwriter James Hunter — known for touring with Van Morrison — the band brings an irresistible blend of soul, R&B, and vintage groove, fresh off their acclaimed new album Off The Fence.
Expert assemblers with gentle hands and curious minds unafraid of intricate corners and impossible skies. We are weathered but worthy — slightly foxed, occasionally incomplete, and rich with history. Mysterious, too: until you put us together, you won’t know what scenes we hold. Compensation includes the thrill of making scattered things whole again, while helping Sylvester Manor learn about its remarkable collection of turn-of-the-20th-century puzzles. If you’re an adult who appreciates delicate old things, beautiful chaos, and tiny victories, please email your weekday availability to jbrennan@sylvestermanor.org with Puzzle Volunteer in the subject line. Dust tolerance preferred.
The trails and grounds are open for your enjoyment, seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. Pick up a map highlighting our four walking trails (Creekside, Woodlands, Old Growth Forest and Farm). Paper maps are available at the kiosk at the front entrance to the Manor and also at the Welcome kiosk located by the parking area near the bathrooms. You can always download a digital version by clicking the button below.
Due to storm damage, the Land Bridge is temporarily closed. Please adhere to the posted trail closures.
Leashed dogs are welcome, but please pick up after your dog and dispose of the waste properly. No bicycles or motorized vehicles are allowed on the trails. The public restrooms are open to the public.
Download the “Sylvester Manor Walking Tour” from the App Store for a self-guided tour of the grounds. Use the app and learn more about our historic property at your own pace.
