Sculpture @ Sylvester Manor Closing

The inaugural Sculpture @ Sylvester Manor, an outdoor exhibition of sculptures, installations and artistic expressions, is closing on September 8. Be sure to stop by the Manor grounds this week to view the exhibition which features a diverse spectrum of artists local to the East End of Long Island. Farm Update

Today is Tumbleweed Tuesday but that doesn’t mean the Farm is slowing down. If anything, the cooler weather brings Fall crops! We just had the 12th week of CSA, which means the season is more than half over, and the fields are producing tomatoes, lettuce, kale, chard, onions, leeks, garlic, peppers, eggplants, basil and cilantro. In addition to our pasture-raised eggs we now have duck eggs and are experimenting with meat birds. They will be featured at the Farmstand later this month or in early October. Meanwhile, our latest batch of pigs continues to thrive and our compost piles continue to grow. Thank you for all your food waste contributions over the summer months!

Farmstand Update

The latest buzz at the Farmstand is honey produced from hives on Sylvester Manor grounds! Laurel Lane honey, beautifully packaged in a beehive jar, is pure, raw and local. And now that it’s feeling fall, you will want to pick up some apples, cider, squashes, pears and more goodies like our own woodland-raised pork, eggs, frozen pizzas, baked goods, pot pies, soups and salads.

Manor House Preservation Update

While cataloging the contents of Andrew Fiske’s desk, we came across this mini shovel. It’s a memento from the construction of the Shelter Island Public Library begun in 1964. It was gifted to Mr. Fiske on September 3, 1964 as a gesture of thanks for his family’s instrumental role in developing the library. Mr. Fiske also delivered the Welcoming Address to attendees of the library dedication on August 14, 1965. However, Sylvester Manor’s relationship with the Shelter Island Public Library began long before the Fiskes. In 1885 Eben Norton Horsford started the library in a shoe closet within the Old Store with over 250 books from his own collection. Additionally, his daughter, Cornelia Horsford, served as the library’s first president. As the Shelter Island Public Library embarks on an exciting expansion, Sylvester Manor is pleased to share this reminder of our longstanding relationship.

Trails Open

The trails and grounds are open for your enjoyment, seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. Pick up a map highlighting our four walking trails (Creekside, Woodlands, Old Growth Forest and Farm). Paper maps are available at the kiosk at the front entrance to the Manor and also at the Welcome kiosk located by the parking area near the bathrooms. Due to storm damage, the Land Bridge is temporarily closed. Please adhere to the posted trail closures.

Leashed dogs are welcome. No bicycles or motorized vehicles are allowed on the trails. The public restrooms are open to the public.
