Nearly Extinct, the Guam Kingfisher Goes Wild on Palmyra Atoll
Called sihek by the Indigenous CHamoru people, Guam kingfishers survived only in zoos and wildlife facilities since the 1980s. Now, after spending nearly a month in aviaries at a TNC preserve and research station within a national wildlife refuge at Palmyra Atoll, nine birds are safely living in the wild.
