Lieut. William Tiffany, Rough Rider, Knickerbocker

William Tiffany was a grandnephew of Commodore Perry, and a nephew of August Belmont.
He arrived at Fort Pond Bay on board the hospital ship, Olivette. Provisions were requested from
Camp Wikoff, but after waiting for six hours, the Olivette continued to Boston. The next day
Lieut. William Tiffany, under doctor’s care, nevertheless died of starvation, a result
of prolonged malnutrition.

“Imagine an American soldier dying of starvation!’
Editorialized the Kansas City Star.
