The Madoo Conservancy is honored to be one of eight NYC/LI groups to be awarded a preservation grant from the Preservation League of New York to complete a Cultural Landscape Report. The Preserve New York Grant Program is a signature grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the Preservation League of New York State. Preserve New York is made possible with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Generous additional support is also provided by The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.

The Cultural Landscape Report will be conducted by the Water Mill-based landscape architecture firm, LaGuardia Design Group, and will include a thorough analysis of existing conditions of the Madoo Conservancy gardens, the identification of existing plants in different seasons, recommendations for repair, restoration and treatment, cost estimates, and a final report. The project will be completed in accordance with the standards of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (SHPO), and the final report will be based on the National Park Service standards, including supporting documentation such as maps and photographs.

This much-needed Cultural Landscape Report will not only serve as an important reference, but will also help in strategic planning, allowing Madoo to raise funds for new projects that are identified—to preserve and enhance the gardens and structures of Madoo for future generations.

The New York State Council on the Arts together with the Preservation League of New York State and the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation will announce eight regional recipients of the 26th round of grant funding through Preserve New York at a news conference at 11:00 a.m. at the Rockville Centre Village Hall on Wednesday, October 3, 2018.

“At its July 2018 meeting, the Preserve New York panel selected 31 applicants in 20 counties around the state to share $251,616 in funding,” said Jay DiLorenzo, President of the Preservation League. “As always, the competition for these funds was intense. We are delighted to help advance the preservation efforts of these organizations with timely funding from Preserve New York.”

Eight grants totaling $72,370 were made in the New York City / Long Island region:

  • Nassau County (2): Village of Rockville Centre – $11,200; North Shore Land Alliance – $9,750;
  • Suffolk County (4): Commack Union Free School District – $7,620; Smithtown Historical Society –$5,800; Sylvester Manor Educational Farm – $10,000; Madoo Conservancy – $8,000;
  • New York County: Renee and Chaim Gross Foundation – $12,000; and
  • Queens County: Greater Ridgewood Restoration Corporation – $8,000.Preserve New York, a competitive historic preservation grant program, was established in 1993 as a partnership between the Preservation League of New York State and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Preserve New York enables the Preservation League to support arts centers, historic sites, music halls, theaters, libraries and other cultural not-for-profit or municipal entities that steward historic buildings in every one of New York’s 62 counties.

A League study completed in 2016 demonstrates that Preserve New York funding has catalyzed preservation efforts across the state and leveraged many times its value in cash and donated services.
