SPRING / SUMMER 2022
Dear Friends of Robert Wilson,

Bob’s Turandot opened last night at the Houston Grand Opera, starring HGO alumna Tamara Wilson in the title role. Turandot marks Bob’s return to HGO for the first time since 1996, when he directed Four Saints in Three Acts there, and his Parsifal in 1991. Turandot runs until May 6.

ICONIC “BED SCENE” FROM EINSTEIN GOES DIGITAL

The latest revival of the original production of Philip Glass and Robert Wilson’s opera Einstein on the Beach (1976) was in 2012, and it toured around the world. Now it has made its entrée into the digital realm: the iconic “Bed scene”, the slow rise of a horizontal light bar into fully vertical, and its upward float out of the scene, has been minted into the first-ever EOB NFT (non-fungible token). Over the past two weeks, the 20-minute NFT was screened on 10 nights at the Kraftwerk Berlin, presented by the DAO Bright Moments. The online auction ends today, April 23, 2022, at 3 PM Eastern / 9 PM Berlin time.

DARRYL PINCKNEY AND ROBERT WILSON’S NEW “DORIAN”

Painter Francis Bacon catches George Dyer red-handed breaking into his artist studio. Instead of calling the police, he paints his portrait. The two become a couple. – Painter Basil Hallward is obsessed with his model Dorian Gray. Gray wishes the painting would age instead of him. – Poet Oscar Wilde is the darling of London Society – until he is sent to prison for “indecent relations” with his lover Alfred Douglas. Darryl Pinckney’s text and Robert Wilson’s production of Dorian weave these three stories into an associative narrative flow, overlapping memories, reflections and feelings.

Dorian opens on June 9 at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, starring Christian Friedel (German version), and on October 1 at the National Theater in Kaunas (Lithuanian version).

MADAMA BUTTERFLY IN “HOMO FABER” EXHIBITION IN VENICE

This year’s edition of “Homo Faber,” a large showcase of craftsmanship in Venice, which was inaugurated in 2018 by the Michelangelo Foundation, focuses on the creative landscape of Japan. In this context, Bob has curated and designed an installation entitled WAITING with peace and darkness, focusing on Japanese art and in particular elements from his stage production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

The installation is on view until May 1 on the beautiful Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, Italy.
