JOE ZUCKER BRUSHSTROKES
ON VIEW AT THE POLLOCK-KRASNER HOUSE

The Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center will present an exhibition of Joe Zucker’s (1941 – 2022) Brushstrokes from July 30 through September 13, 2026.
The Brushstrokes, industrial mops soaked in myriad colors of Benjamin Moore house paint, were first exhibited at Maccarone in 2017. Zucker produced a total of 1,000 five-foot long mops designed to hang in 250 squared modules, meant to echo canvases. Exhibited in its totality, the work would measure 9,000 square feet.
“I have performed it,” Zucker said, “but not seen the final whole.”
The Pollock-Krasner House will exhibit a small selection of these modules, as well as preparatory maquettes. “Our site is not a white-cube, not a gallery, but a home,” says Pollock-Krasner House director Matthew K. Ward, “I believe this makes a difference in how work is interpreted here. Something of the domestic, of the utilitarian, may be restored to the mops here. Their identity as tools, as everyday objects, is brought to the surface.”
Joe Zucker was born in 1941 in Chicago, IL. He received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1966. After several years spent working in Manhattan, Zucker moved to the East End of Long Island in the 1980s, where he lived and worked until his death in 2022. His work has been exhibited the world over and is held in such collections as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Parrish Art Museum.
Artist Chuck Close once said of Zucker’s work: “There is always a metaphorical comment on the nature of work itself…You understand that it is about a painting making itself.” For an artist so involved in process, the Pollock-Krasner House, where Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner developed their own artistic processes, is a fitting venue. The modules, which simultaneously represent individual brushstrokes and entire canvases, encapsulate the entirety of the artistic process in a single installation.
Running concurrently with the Pollock-Krasner House exhibition, GALLERY 851 will be presenting DUBIOUS CHARACTERS, works by Joe Zucker from the series Portrait of Joseph Smith (1984). These large mixed media process paintings constitute satirical depictions of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of LatterDay Saints. GALLERY 851 is located at 851 Springs Fireplace Road, East Hampton NY, 11937. Both venues will hold receptions open to the public on the evening of Saturday, August 1, starting at 5 pm.
Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center The Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center is a National Historic Landmark and the former home and studio of artists Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. Located in the Springs, a picturesque hamlet of East Hampton, New York, the PK House connects visitors with the pioneering legacies of Pollock and Krasner through tours, exhibitions, events, and programs. The residence is a founding member of Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
