Design for World Trade Center Memorial Competition, April 28 – January 14, 2004
The supports hold a globe artifact from the 9/11 attack with an eternal light visible through the ‘scars’ consequent of the attack. The fountain was further designed, and submitted as a spiral-brook-waterfall fountain, with rocks from each nation that suffered losses on September 11th. The lowest ring of the circular fountain would be a waterfall, three feet above grade, creating a constant sound of falling water.
The lower walls consist of glass bricks, providing a quiet sanctuary for reflection. The 150-foot twin towers hollow inside and only illuminated by skylights in the roof of each tower and windows placed randomly in the towers. Exhibit space & portrait gallery.
The competition guidelines called for a memorial below street level, where the foundations had been. This design proposal includes a viewing platform at street level, with stairs to the landscaped memorial site below.
Memorial design proposal submitted by Jeff Heatley in May, 2004. There were 5,200 design submissions — the largest number of entries for any design competition in history.
