Home Port of the Fifth Army Corps — America’s first veterans of a foreign war fought overseas on foreign soil. Twenty-two thousand soldiers, of which five hundred were Rough Riders, returned from Santiago de Cuba on more than forty transports in August and September — more than half suffered from tropical fevers contracted in Cuba — malaria, yellow fever, typhoid and dysentery. More than three hundred died of those diseases at Camp Wikoff.
