General Joseph Wheeler
A General with the Confederacy, then rose to that rank in the U.S. Army,
one of only four to do the same, and the only one to see action in both wars.
Graduated West Point, 1858. To Americans, Gen. Wheeler personified the re-unification
of the nation following the Civil War. Joseph Wheeler also served sixteen years
in Congress representing Alabama.

Ellen Walworth’s daughter, Reubina, died at the Presbyterian Hospital, NYC, on October 18th, of a malignant form of typhoid fever that she had contracted while serving as a nurse in the Detention Hospital at Camp Wikoff. Before volunteering to serve as a nurse at Camp Wikoff, she had been an art student at Vassar.
